Description
Widespread use of metal film catalysts dates from the pioneering work of Beeck et al. (1940), and since that time many studies have been carried out over catalysts of this type. Virtually all of these have been concerned with elucidating reaction mechanisms, and metal films have been adopted as a conveniently accessible form of metal surface of reasonable cleanliness and substantial surface area. The vast majority of these studies have used random polycrystalline metal films in which a variety of crystal planes are exposed to the gas, and in which various types of surface imperfection are also present: although these facts have undoubtedly been widely known, they have also been largely ignored on the general grounds that control and characterization of the surface details have been, at best, extremely difficult. This situation is gradually changing as better means become available for studying film and surface structure, and as the art of epitaxy becomes better developed and understood (cf. Chapters 1 and 3). evertheless, it is clear that for an appreciation of the bulk of the existing literature, some detailed comment is required concerning film structure and properties, particularly of random polycrystalline films. This chapter also presents some comments on general adsorption and kinetic phenomena, with particular emphasis upon concepts that are subsequently used in Chapter 8 where the chemistry of reactions over film catalysts is discussed in detail.
